Let’s write a story

Let's write a story.jpg

Hello students!

This week we are going to build our own short story! We did it before and it was a huge success. Remember? I will leave you the beginning line and each one of you is going to create a sequence to the last post you see. In the end I will  edit it and then publish our short story.

“He was a good guy. However, whenever that little black cat showed up, he started …”

I invite you all to meet in “Percursos iniciais” blog in order for us to have a bigger and stronger group…. and a better story, of course.

Olá alunos!

Esta semana vamos criar o nosso próprio conto! Já o fizemos e foi um enorme sucesso. Lembram-se? Deixar-vos-ei a linha inicial e cada um vai criar uma sequência a partir do último comentário que vir. No final edito e publico o nosso conto.

“He was a good guy. However, whenever that little black cat showed up, he started …”

Convido-vos a encontrarmo-nos todos no blog “Percursos iniciais” de forma a que tenhamos um grupo maior e mais forte e, claro, uma história melhor.

Mário Soares – The face of democracy

mario-soares

Hello students.

This week I would like us to comment about one of the faces of Portuguese politics, that is to say, Mário Soares.

What follows are some sentences taken from an article written to the English newspaper The Guardian. Read them and give your opinion about if you agree Mário Soares represents the face of Democracy in Portugal.

“Soares was central to Portugal’s return to democracy and was prime minister three times and president for ten years.

Portugal’s former president and prime minister, Mário Soares, a central figure in the country’s return to democracy in the 1970s after decades of rightwing dictatorship, has died aged 92.

“My sincere condolences to all Portuguese on the death of Mário Soares,” the European Commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker, tweeted.”

August – The good and the bad

August - the good and the bad.jpgFires in Portugal

August is here!

How a vibrant mix of yellow, orange and red can be a good and a bad thing at the same time! Beautiful sunsets at the beaches opposed to scenarios that look like hell.

An analogy to the good and the evil? Heaven and hell brought together to us?

I would like to read your ideas about this.

Agosto chegou!

Opinion makers

Debate image

This week we are going to be opinion makers. Yes, I know! We have been opinion makers in the last blogs as well. However, this time, let’s imagine we are having a real debate.

We are going to discuss around the following topics:

1. What do you think about the United Kingdom leaving the European Union (EU)?

2. What do you think about the idea of Portugal, one day, leaving the EU as well?

3. Do you think that too much importance is given to football in Portugal?

I need three moderators, one for each topic, people whose task is to interact with the participants and keep the conversation alive! I will be waiting for three of you to present yourselves as moderators!! If until Tuesday I don’t have any volunteers, I will assign three of you students!!!! 😛

This is going to be fun!!!!!!!

IMPORTANT – In this month’s blog, I want us to have only one conversation space. Therefore, let us all meet in “Percursos Iniciais” page!

————————————————————————–

If you could go back in time what would you change?

Once upon a time …

Once upon a time there was a boy who lived in a village with his father and a dog. His father was a good man, but the boy sometimes felt that this wasn`t the right place for him. He felt alone because in his village there were no children. He needed other kids to play with, talk, learn, etc. He thought about going to another place where there were other boys and he would be much happier.
But for the boy to go somewhere else he had to talk with his father.

As the time went on, the boy kept feeling alone. He wanted to know how it was to play with other kids and to have someone of his age to talk to. One day, the little boy asked his father why there were no more children in their village. His dad told him that many years ago all the children, big and small, boys and girls, moved away with their families. So the boy asked: “Why didn’t we go too?” And his father said: “Because this is our home!” But the boy didn’t feel at home, he didn’t feel happy. So in his alone time, before he fell asleep, he imagined these great adventures, were he could be with other kids, from all the corners of the world! Sometimes he imagined that he would go to the beach, to play with the children in the sand! He imagined that they built big, beautiful castles and that his dog ran around them, barking with happiness!

One day, when he was walking throught the forest, he found a very beautiful girl walking alone and crying. He asked her “Why are you crying?” and she sayed “I am lost”. The boy and the girl went into the forest, trying to find her way home. And during their walk, they talked and talked, and laughed and laughed. They met each other. It was the best day of the boy’s life. But when they found a road, the girl recognized the way and she asked him “Do you want to come?” and he said “I can’t.”. But, with just one sentence, the girl said “In this life you can do anything you want. If you don’t get out of the right way, you will never learn the bad way. You will never see the rainbow behind the raining clouds.”

However, he didn’t go with the girl. The boy had other dreams like living near the ocean, feeling the sea breeze on his face, watching the sunset and falling asleep wiht the sound of the waves.

His father had other plans for him. He had taught the boy certain principles and wanted him to be a doctor one day, but that wasn’t the child’s dream and he never obeyed. One day the boy felt the desire to know the world. He started by living by the sea. Then, drawn by an illusion, he felt the need to know a different place. So, he went to an island, where he built a house using the material he had at hand, like branches, leaves and strings. He fed himself by searching for food in the island and communicated with animals. However, the boy remembered his father, specially when the night came.

One day, at daybreak, he realised his senses had gotten stronger, turning more intense his capacity to communicate with animals. He imagined that this gift, the one he just found out he had, could help him to get food since he was starving. So, the boy started talking with the animals, asking them for food and, little by little, the creatures brought him something to eat.

Soon after he ate the food, he thought that he needed to change his life! He remembered his father, everything that happened in their relation… His father was not an easy person to talk with, but he was old! It was time to go back, and to take care of dad! Without his father, the boy was alone! He decided to be a doctor but not of humans, he wanted to be a vet! He loved animals. In this place the animals helped him. Now it was time for him to help other animals! And help his father too! Search for a woman to love … build a big family.. So, he came back.

The boy did everything he could to become a veterinarian (his big dream!). And he succeeded!

One day, while working with the colleagues, he realised they didn`t feel the same love for the animals as he did. They were rough and did not dedicate themselves one hundred percent to that kind of work. Once, a girl had gone to that place where the boy worked and complained about her cat having been badly treated while in observation after a surgery. The boy immediately tried to help the girl, asking about the reason of her suspicion. Indeed, the service wasn’t what he expected to be. He decided to work alone and start from the beginning. He wanted to talk with his father but he still hadn`t done it.
When the boy returned, it wasn’t at all what he expected. He wasn’t well received by his father. He was too old and proud. After the boy had left, his father became very sad and this sadness made him give up of himself. Proud, he hed told his son that, if he was gone, he shouldn’t come back for pity. The boy explained that he had never forgotten him and he wasn’t happy without him. He wanted to come back, to fight for his dream, to work with animals and wanted this dream to be accomplished near his father. Now he needed his help ant wanted him go to work with him.
His father was affected by the words of his son and decided to give him another opportunity, and said to him:

– Son, why don’t you become what I always expected you to be?

– I don’t want dad, because it’s not my dream and sorry for that but I need to express my thoughts.
And he materialized what he always dreamed of. He managed to form his family and lived happy.
– Ok, son. I understand. We need to let our children think for themselves and fight for their dreams, because they have their own personality…

While saying this, the old man remembered when he was a young man and realised that both of them had the same personality. Both had an adventurous spirit. However the wrinkles had marked his now old face and he became nostalgic and then started to imagine his son and his grandson together on an island yet to discover. He thought to himself: “True, they could grow up and build their own personality with the old ones. They can learn to respect human values and become adults, creating their own lifes, while using the same values we taught them.”

And he went on with his thoughts, understanding that it was important to go looking for adventure to another place. He had grown up as a person but he concluded and passed to his son that in every place in the world it is possible to create the dreams and objectives and try accomplish them. As they say, play the music as the instruments. Like this, as the farmland is very good and the climate as well, he decided to dedicate himself to the cultivation of lavander for export.

HERBERT!(the boy`s name) – say the dad – You need to fight for your dreans with power, persitence, and perserverance. I help you but, all the work is yours. In life all dreams are possible.
-Dad, I …I have many questions…I need the answers! I have many dreams too fullfill in my life, but the important question is….Are you going to be by my side, no matter what I decided to do? Or are you going to leave me again? Don´t forget I need you on my side…..

I will always be by your side, my son! I won’t repeat that mistake again.

And as the time went by, their relationship improved as well as the relationship between grandfather (Gregory) and grandson (Rutger). They were extremely happy until one day no one was expecting.

One day a woman appeared in Eindhoven, their city, and she was looking for Herbert. Her name was Heidi, and she asked all around the city where was Herbet’s house. A little girl, Rutger’s friend, knew it and explained it to Heidi. After a few minutes, Heidi was on her way:
– I hope he’s at home. We have so much to talk!
At the end of the road she found the house she was looking for. It was a white house with a big garden full of red, yellow and blue flowers, and a dog by the entrance. She stopped the car and remained inside, hoping to gain the courage to tell Herbet she was dying and she was his mother.

When she finally gained the courage, he saw Helbert going to the garden. She got out of the car and slowly went to the gate, where she rang the bell. Helbert saw the woman and came to the gate.
– Hello. – Heidi said.
– Good afternoon – Helbert said.
– I’m Heidi. I know you don’t know who I am, but I need to talk to you with some urgency. – Heidi said, with her voice shaking.
– All right, come on in, let’s go to the living room. – Helbert said with some concern.

After Helbert made a tea and sit on the couch, Heidi began to speak.

– First of all, I need to say to you that you are really important to me. I know… I know that you don’t remember me but, Helbert, you are my son… My health has become weak, I’m dying, and I think you need to know the truth. Before you try to interrupt me, let me explain the situation, the reason for my absence…

She took a pause, sipped some tea in order to win courage and started talking again.

(Heidi) – Son, I don’t know if your father talked about me sometime. But, in the 90’s, I was journalist, a successful jornalist in New York Times actually. And, one day my boss ordered me to travel to North Corea and make a report about the war and, at the same time, learn more about the religion. And so I did it. I was there about six months and I was full of missed you…

(she started to shake but still talking)

(Heidi) – When I arrived here, my eyes shined when I saw you as at this moment! But some days after, a group didn’t like my report and then they started threatening me. I was really afraid and I knew that I needed to go away…

(Helbert stopped her)

(Helbert)- Stop! But why didn`t you take me with you?

(Heidi) – We lived happily, me and your father, but then a tragedy happened. Your father had an accident and died. I was alone and pregnant and didn`t have anyone to ask for help. Then, a nice couple appeared and promissed to look after you. I didn`t have any means to raise and educate you, so I gave you to them. I couldn`t take you with me. I know I left you in good hands. I know that man loves and sees you as a real son. But I`m so glad I found you! You can’t imagine how mucht it hurt me to leave you. You might be hurt, I understand, but I believe one day you`ll understand that I didn`t have any other option at that moment. I never stopped loving you. That’s why I went away looking for something better for us. I didn’t want to expose you to the uncertainty of the life I was going to have ahead of me. I’m sure you will understand one day. Try to give some kind of value to this meeting of ours and the opportunity life is giving in order for us to build a good relationship from now on. Of course you must be hurt because I went away from your life for such a long time. You’re still too young to understand, but, even far away, I always loved you and missed you so much! Every day I remembered those moments when I held you and we played together. As long as there is hope, I’m going to do everything for us to be together. Believe me, you will always be my little boy. After everything and after all this time without you, I would like to see you again for us to reflect about the moments we lost and think about starting a new life! Trying to get back the afection, the caring, the love we lost one day, and start living as mother and son, sharing all our adventures.

And so it happened. Both chose a house in the country to live together and forget the past filled with suffering.

Sometimes life is funny, but it always prepares us for the world. A lot of people are born and die without ever knowing it. Sometimes life is cruel and puts us within terrible separations, but fortunately other times we have happy endings. We have to go through less enjoyable moments to give the right value to the good ones. Happiness exists in every little detail of our day to day life. We have to be alert to that and let it flow.
