Hello students.
This week I would like us to comment about one of the faces of Portuguese politics, that is to say, Mário Soares.
What follows are some sentences taken from an article written to the English newspaper The Guardian. Read them and give your opinion about if you agree Mário Soares represents the face of Democracy in Portugal.
“Soares was central to Portugal’s return to democracy and was prime minister three times and president for ten years.
Portugal’s former president and prime minister, Mário Soares, a central figure in the country’s return to democracy in the 1970s after decades of rightwing dictatorship, has died aged 92.
“My sincere condolences to all Portuguese on the death of Mário Soares,” the European Commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker, tweeted.”

Good evening everyone,
I don’t know much about Mario Soares, all I know I heard since he was in hospital. However, I heard that he wasn’t a loving person, I mean, he was a straight man, or it is or it isn’t, but above all these things he was a fighter, a big on and we own him much.
Of course we could live in a world full of rules but I can’t imagine how sad would that be. Although some people should follow some of those rules instead of screwing other lifes. But the main point is: Soares harmed himself several times for the nation, for the people and that is what describes a hero and we will always remind him like that.

Lucky you, Claudia! 🙂 Unfortunatly I heard about him a lot, and not in a good way…
Hum 🙂 Sometimes, when someone die is only rememberered for the good things 🙂
Hello everyone!
Well, I’m very sorry that he died, because he’s a person and he have a family. Of course everyone knows that we’ll all going to die, but it’s never easy to deal with that. Sudden or with prolonged disease, it’s never easy… I have respect for that.
In my humble opinion, i don’t like him. He was someone that took advantage of the system and the real people who fought for our freedom and make himself rich (and his family and friends). I can’t see that like a good thing, because the big and corrupted system was and is supported by men like him.
I worked with some of his doctors and they said that he treats them very bad, like they have to serve him just because he was President. He always said that the people will pay the bills, not him, and the doctors are just making their work. I don’t like stupid people or people who has stupid atitudes.
After all, he was a man who made History: the first one to bring Troika to Portugal. And he was President too 🙂
Good afternoon,
This week’s topic of the forum could not be more current and deserved, since all the honors that can be made to Mr. Mário Soares will still be few. The course of this great statesman is long and like all full of ups and downs, points of concord and fracture. But there is one thing we all have to recognize the struggle of this great man for the liberation of Portugal from the Dictatorship was very important and really paid off because Liberdade arrived and for that reason I belong to a generation that only knows this phase of our History Through the books. So we all have a lot to thank Mr. Mário Soares, who also took the name of Portugal across borders and that is why it was at the time of his death so praised internationally.
Good night everyone.
Talk about Mario Soares is talk of man more corrupt than we ever had in the history of Portugal. Alredy has anyone read what does the report of CIA says about him? Was involved in the death of Sa Carneiro. Sold our colonies to the United States of America. I will always remember him as a man who burned our flag in France. An arms dealer who made fortunes selling arms to Angola. Where is the patriotism of this corrupt man? Is it in the portuguese men and women that he ordered to shoot the sharks? Or will it be in the coffres that emptied when he came to power and then go ask for more at troika to now says that who will pay is us while he lived the great at our expense?

Hello everyone!
Mario Soares was a prominent person in the conquest of democracy, for their courage and their contribution to political freedoms.
Good afternoon !

Beijinhos.
Hello everyone!
The theme Mário Soares can’t be more current than it already is.
He was a politician who always fought for freedom and democracy, he was definitely contributing to the implementation of freedom and democracy in Portugal.
It was and I think it will continue to be a symbol of convictions, persistence and courage, and as one of the most important historical figures of our Portugal.

HI
Mário Soares was a man who devoted his whole life to politics.
Over the course its ninety-two years has helped to implemente democracy and the values inherent in it.
We must recognize that is contibution to the solodification of democracy in Portugal it was fundamental.
We can say Mário Soares was a man who marks the History of Portugal, whith good things and bad things. But in my opinion this part of the human being and essentially the political class.
hello
About Dr. Mario Soares as a man and politician there is much to say … Loved by many and hated by others, the truth is that it was without a doubt a man who marked the history of our country.
In my opinion was a great man, who contributed to the freedom of the Portuguese and Portugal. He was a fighter and untiring in the defense of what he believed. I believe that everything he did, he was convinced to be the best.
Still and as everyone was not perfect … As all politicians safeguarded their personal interests, which naturally displeases the ordinary Portuguese.
I also note the fact that I was born in my city, where there is a museum in his honor.
When I was young, they instilled in me the idea that “Soares” was not a good guy, because he belonged to a right-wing family and he was a leftist, but as I grew up and took knowledge of myself, I began to see Things in a different way and to think that after all: Soares was cool!
Rest in peace.

Good Morning!
Obrigada.

Hello!
Ever since I was little, I’ve heard of Mário Soares, but I never knew very well what his role in society was, was a very important politician in the history of democracy after April 25. I hear several opinions about him, which has done very badly to our country, which did well, various opinions. I have no opinion formed about him. But regardless of the man he was, he was a human being, and it seems to me that he will be a historical figure remembered in many years.

Hi!
I don’t have a opinion about Mario Soares. I live in Portugal since 2002 and I don’t know the history of portuguese’ polices. Mario Soares was a man well-known for all countries but some people like him and some people hate him. There are many history about him. It’s true he was a very important politician in last century and some people recognize he helps to built a portuguese’ democracy. But some portuguese accuse him about the case of “retornados”. Who is right?
Thank you all for your comments!
Until next theme!
I only heard that Mário Soares was the man, the politician, the thinker, the founder of democracy. He saw, lived, made live and changed. Everything I know about him, too, I heard.
I know nothing about him.
